Niguelas from the Rincón del Sur

March 16, 2021

Nigüelas

Also known as "the balcony of the Valley". This beautiful town sits at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, where the views are magnificent. In winter it is covered in a  white cloak that conveys a festive feel. In summer, one never tires of looking towards the Sierra, where the view is lost between nature and the blue sky. Its narrow streets full of flowers, planters, geraniums and "rejas" - window grilles, convey an intense smell of jasmine and orange blossom, making your walk even more pleasant. This is also where you'll find the town hall and the romantic gardens, this being the summer residence of the Zayas family.

Next to these gardens, you can discover the Müller Garden, a manor house belonging to the Blanes family. A special place in a unique environment. So much so, it feels as though one is in the Generalife itself. The sound of water and the fountains make one's hearing pause to delight in such harmony and beauty.

Don't leave behind the elegant and majestic chestnut, which I would even dare to say,  is the tree of life. Continue with your walk to reach the square with its 13th century church,  which you won't want to miss the opportunity to visit. You'll love the Almazara, or olive mill, where you can see the olive troughs, presses, ovens, and  mill stones once moved by animals with their eyes covered, circling until the olive released its juice .

This ancient mill is the work of our ancestors, and the only one preserved in Spain. On leaving the Almazara, you come across Carmen's Oven, a wood fired oven where you can still taste the traditional sweet pastries made by grandmothers of yore, pure delight.

Continue walking to arrive at the geo fault where Manu lived. Close to this is the Paseo de la Pavilla. So called because it was where couples walked out together - (walking the "pavilla"). Today it is more like the well-known Caminito del Rey.

Here the views are lost between the mountains, where the fresh water coming down from Sierra Nevada, hides between the rocks and reappears with its heavenly song, between  mountains and landscape towards the Lecrin Valley, with its Moorish towers and orange trees in bloom.

When you return to town, look out for the cosy terraces, where you can eat, have tapas and enjoy a quiet, pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.

Nigüelas has beautiful restaurants in privileged places, where apart from eating well, you can enjoy a romantic dinner with live music.

After all this, I am going to tell you about my rural accommodation called "el rincón del sur" (South Corner) and it could not be named otherwise.

A house with ground floor and loft areas, built in 2006 and located in the middle of nature, one km from Nigüelas.

The plot is about 1200 m2, surrounded by olive groves, rose bushes and lemon trees.  There is a beautiful grass covered area next to the pool, along with a garden full of fruit. Some beautiful cypress trees surround the entire house, providing an enjoyable, tranquil area where you can delight in wonderful views towards the Sierra Nevada.
