I Conference on rural women in rural areas. Confinanced Project 2023-Diputación de Granada.

Dec. 1, 2023

On the 23rd of November took place the "Jornada de la mujer en el medio rural" in the Day Centre of Dúrcal, sponsored by the Diputación de Granada. The inauguration was at 9:00h and included the presentation of Julio Prieto, mayor of Dúrcal, Isaías Padial, president of the Tourism Association of the Lecrín Valley (organisers of the event) and María López, tourism technician and director of the day.

Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed a series of talks and meetings which addressed the situation of rural women from a historical, social and economic perspective. Women have played a complementary role in the development of agricultural tasks and throughout the process of modernisation and division of labour. Their place was in the home and in the care of family members. However, their work has been a fundamental pillar in the configuration of our villages. The rural exodus has been associated with the problem of depopulation and the idea of emancipation linked to the city. However, with the passing of time, women have decided to stay in rural areas, driven by the importance of their roots and by the possibility of combining their family life project with the new entrepreneurial opportunities offered by the current market, in which tourism is one of the main axes.

During the conference, some rural businesswomen, such as Irene Muñoz (Al-Algia rural accommodation in Padul), María Pimientos (gastronomic society in Padul), María Pimientos (rural tourism company in Padul) among others, talked about their experience as entrepreneurs, the challenges they face and their passion for the Lecrín Valley and the rural environment. There was also a journey into the past to learn about the life of women in our region during the 18th century and the way of life and ethnography linked to the women who worked in the Sierra de Dúrcal. The need to resort to the collective memory and to involve the new generations to continue advancing on the path that their mothers and grandmothers had already started to walk, was addressed thanks to the Huellas project developed by the equality area of the Diputación de Granada.

The relevance of associations as an engine of drive, dynamism and community creation was present thanks to the participation of the Almósita Cultural Association and the Al-Sirat Women's Association, both from the municipality of Dúrcal.

Finally, it is worth mentioning the talks aimed at offering the necessary tools for labour insertion through national and European programmes and training in digital literacy and legal procedures.

A day with very satisfactory results which was attended by members of the local councils of Nigüelas and Padul and with a considerable influx of people who were delighted with this activity.
