Flamenco Festival - Summer Fiestas in Restábal

July 24, 2018

Flamenco and Fiestas in Restábal

Summer is the time for celebrations, local fiestas and the reunion of friends and family after months apart. The Lecrín Valley, south of Granada, is no exception. As elsewhere in the country, many of the inhabitants of these small rural villages moved from their beloved hometown to make a living elsewhere in Spain or Europe. In summer they return home to their Patria Chica to visit friends and relatives for a few days to catch up and relax ... or to experience the local fiesta!

Please note that the time is 22.30!

This coming weekend Restábal celebrates the feast of Santa Ana with a variety of activities for all ages and tastes. One of the patron saints of Restábal, the feast of Santa Ana falls on the 26th of July, what could be better than celebrating with a Flamenco Festival on a warm summer's night? Since its inception in 2008, the festival has become the highlight of the fiestas in honour of Santa Ana. Every year, top artists delight the audience with their performances of "cante", dance, guitar and percussion. A very popular event for both locals and numerous visitors to Restábal and surrounding villages.

This year the festival will take place on Friday 27 July at 22.30 in the Plaza del Antiguo Ayuntamiento. The artists "al cante" will be El Guadiana from Badajoz, José Fernández Padre, Sandra Santisteban and La Nitra, all from Granada. "Dancing" will be Claudia La Debla and her company. On guitar, Ramón del Paso and José Fernández Hijo. A brilliant programme of talented and experienced flamenco artists.

The fiestas last almost 3 days, starting at 19.30 on the 26th of July with the traditional ringing of the bells from the church bell tower. This is followed by mass, an exhibition of modern dance and the selection of the Ladies and Masters of the Fiestas. Over the next two days, the celebrations include local and traditional games and competitions, clay pigeon shooting, a singles and married football match, a gymkhana for the whole family and other entertainment. All this is accompanied by popular gastronomic delights, such as tapas and a large paella, not to mention the daily verbena. On the 28th of July, after another full day of activities, the fiesta comes to an end when Santa Ana is carried in procession through the village. The popular fireworks display and the last verbena mark the end of the festivities for another year.

Happy Holidays Restábal!

A scene from Lorca and Granada in the Generalife Gardens

While Restábal is celebrating, another flamenco festival is underway in Granada. The annual festival, Lorca y Granada, dedicated to and inspired by the figure and work of the poet Federico García Lorca.

In Granada es Cultura we have found this information about this festival:

"The Lorca y Granada show in the gardens of the Generalife is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Granada.

In this 17th edition of Lorca y Granada, flamenco will be nourished by the work and figure of Federico García Lorca to create "Flamencolorquiano".

You can enjoy Flamencolorquiano Lorca y Granada 2018 from Thursday 19 July to Saturday 1 September.

The new proposal of Lorca y Granada in 2018 counts with the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía, the artistic direction of Rafael Estévez.

The original idea and choreography of the flamenco show Lorca y Granada 2018 "Flamencolorquiano" is by Rafael Estévez and Valeriano Paños and counts with the choreographic and musical collaboration of Juan Kruz Díaz de Garaio and Esnaola, without forgetting the original music by Jesús Guerrero.

Arcángel will be the special collaborator and María Terremoto will be the guest singer.

Buy your advance tickets here. Remember that advance ticket sales until 18 July have a special price of 20 € and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays there is an offer of two tickets for the price of one, 2×1 for 34 €.

FLAMENCOLORQUIANO, A SUCCESSION OF CHOREOGRAPHIC, MUSICAL AND SCENIC
CHOREOGRAPHIC, MUSICAL AND SCENIC
A fantasy of avant-garde, surreal, flamenco and popular passages that finds that "imbalance from which contrast emerges as a beautiful theatrical effect" and subject to the anachronism that results in the "condensation of an era", concepts followed by the poet. These images amalgamate thousands of Federicos: from the surreal and experimental Federico to the Moorish, black, Jewish, gypsy and Christian Federico. Two sides of the same coin, whose mint is the artistic collaboration with Juan Kruz Díaz de Garaio Esnaola. We will travel to flamenco itself, dancing seguiriyas, granaínas, fandangos, cantes campesinos, bulerías, tangos, romances, alegrías and soleares, among other 'palos', which will be sung with texts by Federico.
