Church of San Juan Bautista

DETAILS

  • Municipality: NIGÜELAS
  • Type of Equity: Chapels
  • Description: Mudejar temple dedicated to San Juan Bautista, built in the sixteenth century with stone masonry and solid brick beams.

INFORMATION

Its floor plan is rectangular and it presents a stone masonry factory and solid brick girders. The cornice is made of Conchar limestone, as well as its two doorways in Doric style and a semicircular arch. Inside, it is important to note the Mudejar coffered ceiling made of Albuñuelas pine, rebuilt after the fire that took place during the Moorish rebellion in 1568. The nave is separated from the main chapel by a large round arch. The coffered ceiling boasts a large pineapple carved with muqarnas. The altarpiece is Baroque from the end of the 18th century, gold and polychrome, and its structure consists of three separate streets with elegant stipes of profuse decoration.

This temple treasures a magnificent imagery with sculptures from the 16th to the 20th centuries. It highlights the sculpture of the patron saint San Juan Bautista, made by the great Granada image maker José Risueño. The interior of its walls is decorated with paintings from the Granada schools, some of them of great worth.
